The remains of a mother aged 34 and her young daughter, 10 have been found inside freezing appliances in an residence in the western part of Austria.

The victims, a woman from Syria and her daughter, who had been unaccounted for for a number of months, were detected on the end of last week. The freezers were hidden behind a plasterboard wall in the apartment, situated in the Innsbruck area.

A pair of males, a 55-year-old Austrian and his brother aged 53, were taken into custody in the month of June. The older man, a work associate of the female victim, informed law enforcement last week that there had been an incident—but rejected homicide.

Addressing reporters earlier, a spokesman for the public prosecutor's office announced the pair were being held on "strong suspicion of intentional killing".

The identities of those implicated have not been released by police, in following Austrian law.

The family's disappearance was originally brought to light by the cousin of the mother, who resides in Germany, on the 25th of July last year.

Investigators stated the 55-year-old suspect claimed at the time she had embarked on an prolonged visit with her daughter to see her family in Turkey.

The victim's bank card was then noted as being active abroad several times.

Yet when officers entered the mother's apartment, her cellphone was discovered.

Someone also stated listening to a commotion in the apartment, and shouts of "mama" on the day the two were thought to have disappeared.

A broader police investigation was initiated, with authorities finding multiple communications transmitted via the woman's phone—among them a notice of quitting to her employer and messages to the male colleague.

Law enforcement stated a four-figure sum was also sent to the individual.

Katja Tersch stated to reporters on Tuesday that a storage unit had been leased before the mother and child went missing and a cooling unit had been installed within.

The brothers removed the appliance from the facility on the day the mother and daughter vanished, the official stated. And a seven days after, they acquired an additional appliance.

Officials believe they believe this suggests the fatalities were premeditated.

"The reason for their demise was not identifiable due to the condition of the bodies," Tersch stated.

Mayr—from the legal authorities—said the exact sequence of events is yet to be determined, but the bodies were carefully placed and not discovered during a earlier inspection.

Although the men were taken into custody in June, it was only on 12 November that the 55-year-old acknowledged an event and to storing the victims. He denies any plan to cause death, investigators stated.

Meanwhile, his brother acknowledged a cover-up but denied involvement in a homicide.

The two suspects are at this time in pre-trial detention in prisons in two Austrian cities, around 117 miles (189km) apart.

Through a combined announcement, the nation's official for women's affairs and Justice Minister declared the "alleged double murder... represents the swift and cruel conclusion of a mother and child and exposes a cruel system".

"Female individuals are falling victim to homicide due to the sole reason that they are female," they added.

"Murders of women are a profoundly embedded and society-wide problem that we must address decisively."
