The distinctive yellow-colored apartment block in the background helped us locate the footage.
We are verifying video footage and photographs shared this morning that show the aftermath of a alleged vehicle-borne explosive explosion that Russian officials say fatally injured a senior soldier in Moscow.
Russian authorities stated that Lt Gen Fanil Sarvarov was in the car that detonated and that he later died of his injuries. A probe is currently ongoing.
Our starting point to check the site from which the pictures originated relied on social media reports saying the blast occurred on Yasenevaya Street in the southern part of the Russian capital.
We used street-view imagery on Google Maps and the Russian search engine Yandex to corroborate the distinctive yellow colour of a adjacent residential complex seen in the video.
Identifying additional structures, streetlights and the road configuration confirmed where the pictures were taken.
We also checked that the videos were recent and that the visuals had not undergone digital alteration.
