'Living a Nightmare': Relatives of Missing Young People Desperately Seek Answers After Ski Resort Inferno
The relatives of teens missing after a tragic blaze at a venue in a Switzerland's alpine town are confronting an painful period of uncertainty for official news and requesting clues about their family members via social media.
The blaze ripped through the Le Constellation bar in the alpine resort, located in the Alps of the Valais region, in the early hours of January 1st. Verified footage depict the roof structure catching alight as bottles with sparklers are raised in celebration.
Authorities have indicated that it could take an extended period to formally name the victims of the disaster, which killed 40 people and hurt another over a hundred. A spokesperson stated on the latest update that 113 of the injured have been identified, with work still underway to locate the final individuals.
In the interim, loved ones have been taking to online platforms to appeal for clues about their loved ones who were in attendance that night.
Heartbreaking Pleas for the Missing
The whereabouts of Swiss national Arthur Brodard, a teenager, are still unconfirmed, according to an appeal from his parent.
The who lives of a town near Lausanne, told a publication that she had gone back to the city to see if he was in the hospital, while his father did the same in Bern, but did not locate him.
"I'm living a nightmare, a nightmare. The options are finding my son in the morgue, or I find him in intensive care. It's terrible," she told the paper.
She added that some of his peers had been discovered with burns covering a significant portion of their bodies. "It's indescribable; they endured an absolute nightmare."
The Italy's government has said that six of its citizens are still unaccounted for.
One of those is Emanuele Galeppini, a 16-year-old sportsman, who hailed from Genoa but now residing in Dubai.
The Italian Golf Federation has said that he is dead, without directly referencing the fire, paying tribute to a "young athlete who carried with him dedication and true sportsmanship."
His father, is quoted as saying that his son was at the bar and was last heard from around the new year. An official spokesperson has stated that a formal confirmation of his death is not yet.
Further Missing Individuals
Giovanni Tamburi, sixteen, is also unaccounted for. His mother told reporters that he had been on vacation but had gone out with friends and found himself at the venue.
"Someone with him said they fled after the fire started and that he had his mobile with him, but then at a certain point he lost sight of him," she said, adding he had been wearing a distinctive gold chain.
One of his teachers stated, "He was known for his kindness and positive demeanor, combined with great responsibility. He would frequently offer to help out."
Alice Kallergis, who holds both Swiss and Greek citizenship but lives permanently in the country, was also present on that night, according to reports.
Her sibling has posted an appeal online, saying the relatives has had "no news" regarding the teenager or the three friends she was with, who are also unaccounted for.
Consular authorities from her other nation say they are actively engaged with the developments.
