Three members of law enforcement were killed and no fewer than 15 others got wounded in an apparently premeditated detonation from gas at a rural property in Italy's north.

Event Timeline

The detonation occurred as law enforcement and fire personnel went into the property in the vicinity of the city of Verona to carry out an eviction order for three siblings in their late 50s and mid-60s.

The three deceased individuals were members of the Italian military police.

Arrests and Aftermath

Two individuals were taken into custody at the scene and one more individual who escaped following the blast was located not long after. The trio have been taken to the hospital.

The blast could be audible as far as 3 miles distant and images from the scene revealed the property left as a pile of rubble.

“This is a time for grieving,” said Interior Minister the Interior Minister, who mentioned that efforts had been made to displace the three siblings in the earlier times.

Financial Context

The leader of the Veneto area, the regional head, explained the residence was subject to an eviction order due to debts accrued by the property owners.

Conflict resolution experts had been assigned to engage the family members who had locked themselves into the property. When the officers reached the location shortly after 03:00 (01:00 GMT), officials think a family member set off the blast.

“As we went inside, we encountered a completely deranged action,” regional commander Claudio Papagno stated to the media.

“A gas cylinder had been set off, and the blast directly hit our members,” he added.

Molotov cocktails were also found at the site, the Interior Minister said.

Impact Assessment

The wounded by the explosion included 11 other members of the military police as well as three members of national police and a firefighter.

According to the local prosecutor, the building was in a poor condition and had lacked electrical service.

The prosecutor was convinced the explosion had occurred on a story above the doorway and stated to the press it was a “premeditated and voluntary homicide”. Just prior to the explosion, he mentioned officers had “heard a whistle, probably the gas canisters being opened”.

Neighbor Statements

“Everyone was aware the circumstances were severe,” local residents stated to local news, mentioning that the trio had in the past stated to “blow themselves up” rather than leave the house.

“The blast resulted in a ‘horrific, deeply distressing and tragic cost’.”

The Defense Minister Minister Crosetto united with other political leaders in honoring the three men who had lost their lives in the line of duty.
