The offspring of ex- South African President Jacob Zuma has denied all charges to terror charges at the start of her legal proceedings in the harbor city of Durban city.

The defendant, forty-three, is being charged over remarks she made on social media in the past during violent protests in South Africa that followed the detention of her parent.

A seven-day period of chaos in multiple regions of the country in the summer of 2021, including looting and fire-setting, caused at least 300 individuals killed and resulted in damage worth an projected $2.8bn (£2.2bn).

Zuma-Sambudla has been accused of encouraging this violence and faces allegations of encouragement to commit terror-related activities and public disorder.

Background of the Case

The unrest were focused in the areas of the Gauteng province and KwaZulu-Natal and came after the former president's arrest for disobeying a court order to give evidence at an inquiry into accusations of graft while he was in power.

She has always rejected the allegations against her, with her attorney previously calling the prosecution's evidence as insufficient.

She has also frequently claimed the allegations against her were an effort to resolve political scores with her dad after he established his own party and ran against the African National Congress.

Backing and Court Representation

This was echoed by the foundation, which stated the legal matter was an "power abuse" and a "organized effort" of "politically motivated and family-related persecution" against the ex-leader and his family.

A small number of supporters from her party, uMkhonto weSizwe, turned up outside the KwaZulu-Natal high court, while her father and other group representatives were present at the hearings inside.

Her legal team has stated that the evidence presented by prosecutors is unconvincing and does not have substantial evidence for a conviction.

Key Points of the Legal Proceedings

  • Social media statements from 2019 form the core of the government's argument
  • Violent demonstrations in 2021 resulted in major fatalities and economic damage
  • The defendant faces multiple counts of provocation to public disorder
  • Legal hearings are expected to carry on for several days

The legal proceedings continues as the prosecution and defense present their arguments before the judge in what is anticipated to be a closely watched judicial process with major policy implications for South Africa.
