Adult Swim's Top Fresh Series of This Year Gets a Significant Extension for an Additional Two Seasons.
During the fall season, the late-night programming block debuted a new season of its quirky hit, Smiling Friends. But, shortly thereafter, the channel unveiled a fresh animated series with a distinctly unique vibe. Haha, You Clowns emerged as heartwarming and calm, reminiscent of a cartoon version of a contemplative talk show. At a time often characterized by cynicism, this show's wholesomeness found an audience and propelled it a breakout hit.
A Major Commitment
On December 18th, Adult Swim made a major announcement: Haha, You Clowns has been picked up for two more seasons. This gives creator Joe Cappa significant creative freedom to further explore the world of the Campbell family. The show centers on three polite teenage brothers whose defining trait is their strong bond for their widowed father, with Cappa portraying for all four key characters.
"My deepest thanks go to the audience of the show who gave *Haha, You Clowns* a chance and shared it with others," said Cappa. "I’m incredibly thrilled that I get to continue exploring the Campbell household for seasons to come."
A President's Endorsement
In the same announcement praise from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who described the series as "radically heartfelt and oddly captivating." He specifically highlighted the fans who found the show and advocated for its uniquely offbeat sensibility.
"All of you got behind this new show, praised it on social media, and grew it week over week so we could approve not one, but two more seasons," noted Ouweleen. "As the show says: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"
A Different Kind of Comedy
Upon its debut, Haha, You Clowns was described as "a wholesome alternative" to other adult animated fare. There’s something unexpectedly cozy about observing this endearing family navigate their daily lives.
Previously, creator Joe Cappa stated his goal to evolve comedy past its long-running cynical streak. He traced this trend to the rise of certain blockbuster franchises.
“It feels like there's a default mode of irony that we can't get ourselves out of,” said Cappa. “It feels as if we have to know we’re the cleverest viewer in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for 10 years, and we just have to laugh at something different now. It's time for comedy to grow.”
What Comes Next
With this renewal, with Haha, You Clowns locked in for the future, Cappa may well catalyze that comedic shift. At a minimum, the renewal guarantees audiences additional episodes to experience the gentle humor of the beloved Campbell clan.
The season 1 finale of Haha, You Clowns is scheduled to air on December 21st. The entire series is currently streaming on HBO Max.
